Instead of our regular corporate, formal and structured worship we are setting aside this day for flexible, informal and versatile worship that can happen wherever you are, whoever you are near, and whatever is appropriate to your own way of coming close to God in worship. sabbatical? Feel like you just made it to the end of the year? Now feeling exhausted? Feeling drained? There is a time for work and a time for rest! That is why our whole corps family is taking this day, the first day of January 2017 to rest in God and reflect on his goodness to us. In the pattern of creation, when God formed the world and all that is in it, he then stood back and reflected on what he saw. As he then rested from work, he did so with the knowledge that all he saw was a blessing. As we separate this day from our usual schedule let us draw close to God and see his blessings to us. May you bask in the Creators favour today and as you reflect on his goodness to you, may your whole being be renewed and experience God s perfect shalom*. Sabbatical: relating to the Sabbath. INSPIRATION STOP It might be a good idea to ask ourselves how we develop our capacity to choose for joy. Maybe we could spend a moment at the end of each day and decide to remember that day whatever may have happened as a day to be grateful for. In so doing we increase our hearts capacity to choose joy. HENRI NOUWEN God wants us to be present where we are. He invites us to see and to hear what is around us, and through it all, to discern the footprints of the Holy. RICHARD J FOSTER God looks at the world through the eyes of love. If we, therefore, as human beings made in the image of God also want to see reality rationally, that is, as it truly is, then we too must learn to look at what we see with love. ROBERTA BONDI He made you so you could share in His creation; could love and laugh and know Him. REFLECTION My child, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life and abundant welfare they will give you. Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and of people. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body. 1 PROVERBS 3:1-8 Look back over the year and reflect on what God has revealed, taught, confirmed and/or challenged you about. Unpack what you recall and really look at it scrutinise it turn it over see what is underneath it and behind it. Thank God for his instruction and leading. Ask for greater revelation, insight, understanding and faith in 2017. view 5
CONFESSION release Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put and a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. PSALM 51:10+11 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 JOHN 4:10 We are restless when things are weighing on our hearts and minds. Include a time of confession in your Sabbath space so you encourage a sense of release from whatever may be oppressing your spirit or separating you from God. Cast yourself on the mercy of God. Approach his throne of grace with boldness knowing he is a just and compassionate Lord. Draw your own symbol for forgiveness and freedom. 6 7
